A certified nursing aide, also known as a CNA, has several patient care responsibilities, including helping those that are hospitalized.
CNAs help patients move, bathe, and take care of themselves. The demand for CNAs is great. According to the U.S. Bureau of Statistics, CNA jobs are expected to grow by 10 percent by 2026.
In many states a person is required to complete a CNA program and pass a competency test, and Illinois is no exception. In order to become a CNA in Illinois, a person needs to complete an Illinois CNA program, pass a competency test and a skills test.
Locating a CNA program
Find a CNA program on the Illinois Department of Public Health website for approved programs. The site has several programs to choose from. Choose your desired program in your area. Training programs are usually held at community colleges and high schools. Contact different community colleges in your area.

Enrolling in a training program
Enter the Illinois CNA training program of your choice. Most Illinois programs require that you have a high school diploma. Typically, CNA training entails nutrition, anatomy, and infection stability classes.
Finish your coursework
Complete the requirements of the program. At least 75 hours of training and 100 hours of on the job training needs to be completed for those who desired to work in nursing homes. The program can last anywhere from two to five months. Complete coursework in the basics of nursing.
Competency preparation
Prepare for the competency exam and skills test by going to the Southern Illinois University at Carbondale’s Nursing aide testing website. This website offers practice exams to help you prepare for the test. For the skills test you should know how to properly wash your hands and how handle a patient.
