Geosyntec is actively growing our dams and levees practice and is seeking a part-time limited-term Hydropower Mechanical Subject Matter Expert in Johnson City, TN to help grow our already established market. Our client base includes a diverse mix of private, municipal, and governmental clients. The candidate must possess the skills and experience to develop and implement new strategies and customized solutions to complex environmental and engineering problems.

  • Expertise specific to the mechanical design and evaluation of hydraulic gates, pump-storage turbines, hydro turbines, etc.
  • Superior technical, managerial, and business development leadership.
  • Prepare technical and cost proposals.
  • Provide leadership/mentoring to technical staff.
  • Communicate effectively and efficiently with team members, clients, regulators, and contractors.

Here are some other things you should know about this position:

  • Training: This position requires OSHA health and safety, first aid, and CPR training and medical monitoring, paid for by the firm. We also offer professional development opportunities including technical conferences, in-house seminars, webinars, and mentoring, that allow our professionals to build the technical and business skills necessary to become successful consultants.
  • Fieldwork: Not anticipated outside of infrequent site visits/inspections
  • Overnight travel: As-needed, infrequent

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in mechanical engineering. (required)
  • Professional registration (i.e., P.E.). (required)


  • At least 15 years (20+ preferred) of design experience in the hydro-mechanical operation of hydroelectric facilities or equivalent combination of education and experience. (required)
  • Thorough knowledge and experience with dam safety regulations. (required)
  • Regional visibility through involvement in professional associations or trade organizations. (preferred)
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record for business travel. (required)
