No Experience With Affiliate Marketing? No Problem

My day job allows me to set my own hours. While still being able to make a living, this allows me to pursue my hobbies and dreams. I was able to focus on my side hustles in the evenings and on weekends. My parents have always encouraged me to try a lot of side hustles, including building gas/electric powered bikes, fixing and flipping VW Bugs, an aerial photography business, Amazon selling, and many others. Staying open to new opportunities and thinking outside the box have been taught to me by them. I have taken bits and pieces of what has worked and what hasn’t to create a better formula for the next venture. I’m confident that this new formula will be the key to success in my next venture.

I decided to learn more about niche websites and the concept of affiliate marketing. I started researching and reading about how to build a successful website. I became more immersed in the idea of owning a website that is earning income when I did more research. I spent a lot of time reading and watching videos to learn more about niche websites. The key to my success in building a successful niche website would be my knowledge. I had two options, I could either start a niche review website from the ground up or purchase an established website earning consistent monthly revenue. I researched the pros and cons of both options to make an informed decision.

With no previous affiliate marketing experience, very little website management, or understanding of SEO, Purchasing a website would be a more lucrative option for me. I researched the best ways to make money on my website. For three to four months I scoured the Empire Flippers marketplace looking for the perfect affiliate website to acquire.

Niche Website Purchase

There are many types of websites that make money. The best website for me would be a niche review website. I was excited to start building something that I could call my own. I lost out on two potential websites because of the high competition from other buyers on Empire Flippers. I’m looking for a good website and will keep searching. I was too slow to make a decision. I missed out on a chance.

The perfect niche website came to market. It gained millions of followers in a short period of time, becoming one of the most popular websites in its niche. The website met my search criteria in a few minutes. This website was perfect for my needs. The offer of $49,000 was accepted on January 1st. The offer was the result of months of negotiation.

The website was focused on 3d printers, cameras, and drones. Customers could make informed decisions when purchasing from the comprehensive and in-depth reviews provided by it. Buying guides for other tech products were advertised. Video game consoles, accessories, and games are sold at this online store. There is a fairly specific niche. The niche is ideal for those looking for a specialized field. At the time of purchase, the website had roughly 45,000 monthly visitors and 90,000 page views. The site made an average of $1,700 a month at the time of purchase. The potential to increase profits in the months ahead made it an attractive investment for buyers. I wanted to make it bigger. I wanted to create something that I could be proud of.

The website was a good place to start learning about the inner workings of an affiliate website. There was ample opportunity for growth. Employees were able to reach their full potential by developing their skills and knowledge.

Selling A Niche Site For Profit

I used general business practices and marketing awareness to increase the profitability and user experience of the website. I am proud of the results achieved because I worked hard to ensure that the website had a competitive edge. I had no website experience prior to this, but I would read articles and try what I learned. I would ask questions on forums and read the replies to get a better understanding. If you haven’t already, I highly recommend checking out these 67 best SEO tips. I learned what worked and what didn’t through trial and error. I was successful in achieving my goals because I figured out the best way to approach my task. Knowing what doesn’t work is more important than knowing what does. This knowledge can be applied to many areas of life.

I contemplated selling my website in April of last year because my yacht brokering job required more of my attention. I decided that the extra income from my website was too valuable to give up and so I found a way to manage both of my commitments. I took an offer of $75,000 cash from a private equity company after learning what I needed to from the website. I accepted the offer without hesitation because I knew it was a great opportunity to get my career back on track. (Note, many private equity companies are buying up niche websites to create a fund/portfolio for outside investors.)

The website went from an average of $1,700 per month to about $3,200 per month in four months under my ownership. The website was successful because of my marketing plans and dedication. Traffic didn’t increase, but profit nearly doubled. This shows that cost-cutting measures have improved the company’s financial performance.

Next, I will explain how this is possible. It is an exciting concept that I want to share with you. I sold the website for a $26,000 increase and earned a total of $40,000 in 4 months. I was motivated to continue building businesses online because I was proud of my achievement.

Overall traffic did not increase, how did I increase profitability? Even though traffic levels remained unchanged, I was able to generate higher profits by increasing the average purchase value of customers. Outlined below are four tactics I used to nearly double the profitability of my niche site.

1. Moved Several Affiliate Accounts Away From ShareASale

A large tech manufacturer and retailer was one of my largest affiliates. We were able to give customers exclusive discounts and offers on their products. ShareASale is an affiliate platform for companies that do not have their own proprietary affiliate program. They launched a proprietary program to manage their relationships with partners. The affiliate system was released by Gear Best. It has become one of the most popular online shopping programs. ShareASale is a middleman and needs to make money, so when comparing ShareASale commission percentages to the GearBest direct program, it was a no-brainer. We were able to save a lot of money by going with GearBest. The extra couple dollars per sale was a result of the tedious process of changing out all the affiliate links. The effort was worth it as the new links drove more revenue. There are great affiliates that offer incredible discounts to boost sales. The customer support team is very helpful.

2. Made The Side Banner Ad Change Depending On Content

The side banner ad was static when I took over. I made sure that the ad was always relevant and interesting. The banner made $400 a month for the website. The results of the banner conversion were far more than the team had expected. I wanted the banner to change depending on what the viewer was reading. This would be a great way to engage the viewer. If the reader was on an article about drones, a banner would appear, if the article was about an action camera. I was able to serve an ad that was tailored to the reader with the best chance of conversion. The strategy resulted in a higher return on investment than traditional ads. There are some things that can do this. There are plenty of online resources available to help if you don’t have any Plugins that can do this. A simple script can be written by a programmer. It is a great way to manage settings, but it can be time consuming and tedious if there are a lot of settings.

3. Removed Google AdSense Ads

AdSense ads can be ugly and have low conversion rates, so experiment with this, changes from website to website. It is important to consider the impact of AdSense ads on user experience, as this could potentially outweigh any revenue benefits. I reached out to tech manufacturers and retailers that were featured on the website instead of showing an ad from AdSense. I spoke to them about advertising packages. It’s more lucrative to do direct ad sales if you sell banner space for hundreds of dollars a month. I can create a reliable source of revenue for my business by maximizing my income potential. Retailers used direct ad banner sales to give away products. They were often used to generate more interest in the retailers’ products and services. For $600 a month, a tech retailer would give my reader a chance to win a free drone in exchange for their email. Any tech enthusiast will be excited by the chance to win a free drone. It was a win-win for everyone, the manufactures would receive email addresses, my readers would win free product, and I would receive a nice monthly check. The outcome of the deal made for a great start to the partnership.

4. Utilized Google AdWords

I created large spreadsheets to track conversions because I am big on analyzing data. I’m constantly tweaking the spreadsheets to make sure they capture everything I need to know to make informed decisions. I wanted to know what was working and what wasn’t. I wanted to make sure I was getting the most out of my efforts. I found that I had four main articles that accounted for the majority of the website income, so I decided to experiment with AdWords ads to promote these articles, and the results were staggering! I saw a sharp increase in website traffic and revenue within the first few days of launching the AdWords ads, proving that investing in AdWords was a wise decision.

I saw an increase in sales and commission when I promoted these articles. The quality of the articles I was promoting contributed to the increase in affiliate sales and commission. I was only spending a small amount of money per day. I had to keep my budget in check. Here is the comparison of two weeks of no AdWords ads to two weeks of AdWords ads:

Week 1 and 2, no ads: $12,044 in affiliate sales, $838  commission

Week 3 and 4, with ads: $20,322 in affiliate sales, $1,418 commission

Everything was the same with the website during the test. The test results were analyzed to make sure no lasting effects were left on the website. There were no holidays during this time. Businesses had to focus on work with no respite during this time. There were no special sales. Special discounts were not available.

Where Did I Put My Profits?

I invested a percentage of my profits in the stock market. I’m hoping that my investment will pay off in the long run. Since I had a substantial ROI in the niche website space, I reinvested some of the profit into another website purchase.

I gained practical, hands-on experience when I owned the website for four months. It gave me the confidence andskills to build websites. I’m proud of the websites I’ve created. I was encouraged to keep inventing in niche websites. The success of my invention inspired others in my community to pursue their own creativity.

I started building a team to create niche websites. I’m confident that we can create successful websites with the right people and resources.

Current Side Hustles

I am building out niche websites from the ground up. I would like to have a portfolio of websites that make money. I’m building up my skills and knowledge to make this a reality. I have a small business that I work on for Amazon. I look for ways to increase my profits and expand my business. Two of my products do a lot of sales. I’m excited to see the success of my products. I have good friends that are killing the Amazon game ($8k to $10k per month). Amazon can be very profitable, but very dependent on the right products. In order to maximize your profits, it is important to understand the costs associated with Amazon FBA, such as storage and shipping fees. I would like to dig deeper into drop shipping businesses at the end of the year. I want to find out how I can make this business model work for me.

Key Takeaways For MM Readers

If you have an idea, try it. Don’t be afraid to give it a try even if you aren’t sure it will work. Do not worry about how you are perceived. Failure is a part of life and an opportunity to learn. Continue to try and keep your head down. Don’t give up, no matter what obstacles come your way.

You can bounce back with a new approach if you mitigate your risk. When evaluating the reasons for failure and where improvements need to be made, be sure to document your processes so you can refer back to them.

Ask questions. I have met many successful business owners through fishing and boat selling. I was inspired by their work ethic and dedication to achieving success, which has motivated me to strive for the same level of excellence in my own endeavors. I ask for their input when I consult with these gentlemen. Their feedback has helped me make decisions and move my projects forward. Every successful person has asked for help in the past, don’t shy away from doing the same. It’s always good to seek the advice of others, no matter how successful you are.

I didn’t have any experience with affiliates, websites, or websites prior to last year. I was determined to learn as much as I could and eventually become a successful affiliate marketer. I use online resources. I’m trying to improve my skills and knowledge. I want you to create a success story of your own. The keys to creating your own success story are to dream big, believe in yourself and never give up.
