To really succeed at making a career transition, and still love what you do, Identify Your Passion. Yes, job search success starts with knowing what you want and knowing what you know. But finding work you love, no matter what the job title, also requires knowing what you are passionate about.
What is passion? On wikipedia.org I found the following… “a feeling of unusual excitement, enthusiasm or compelling emotion towards a subject (or) idea…” To me, Passion is that one thing in your life you love to do. The one thing you just can not stop yourself from talking about and engaging in.
An example is my passion for making the impossible possible. It is what I do. A common thread that weaves itself through my life in all I do. In my work and at home, I always seek opportunities to prove that the impossible is truly possible. I study it, talk about it and pursuit it all costs, because I love it. Ask my partner, he wishes I’d choose another subject.
When I look back at my past I see that as a child, my heroes were Wonder Woman and The Wonder Twins. They always seemed to create something out of nothing. Coming up with ingenious ways to get what they need and want.
When I look at my home, I find that many of the project I tackle are motivated by my desire to show someone (or rather my inner critic) that I can accomplish what they think me incapable of, and therefore making the impossible, possible.
In my corporate roles I was always work to help the company and my co-workers make the impossible possible by creating something out of nothing and finding ingenious ways to get what they want – goals, plans, more sales, completed projects, career moves, and just about anything else.
And now in my current career as a coach, my greatest joy is when I am helping executives, managers, business owners and professionals in career transition make the impossible possible in their next career or business opportunity.
You also have a passion, a single common thread that weaves itself through all that you do. It was evident in your childhood playtime, in your business past, and it is what you seek to do in the future. It is there, even if you are not aware of it. No matter what titles you have had, there is a thread, a common link running between your now and your past.
So what is your passion? That one thing that has weaved itself throughout your life, even when you did not know it. And how do you find it?
When I work with clients I look for the following clues as a starting place. You can use them too.
