Some advice on things you can do to increase your chances of getting the job you’re after, from someone who used to hire people.
After spending many years behind the desk as someone doing the interviewing of prospective applicants, I’ve noticed that there tended to be just four or five different kinds of applications/resumes that landed on my desk. But only one of them was the kind that led to an interview and eventually someone being hired; and that was the kind that showed me that the person applying had done their homework.
To Get the Job you Need to Fit with the Job Description
Then as now, whenever there was an opening to be filled, the applications or resumes came piling in, most of which would just as quickly be tossed in the trash due to the person applying not really paying much attention to the job description. Thus, one of the biggest factors that led to someone being hired, was actually fitting the job description.

I understand that a lot of people think the best way to get a job is to simply apply to every single company in town, or in the phone book. The trouble is, the people receiving those applications can very easily recognize what’s going on by the generic nature of the cover letter and/or resume, so all those people have succeeded in doing was wasting their own time and that of those who had to read the letters sent. This is not a good way to go about getting a job.
I can’t stress this enough, the best way to get a job, is to focus on those companies that have a position open that matches your skill set.
