Position Summary

The Business Development Manager plays a crucial role in the Business Engagement Department’s mission to provide San Diego County employers with a delightful, supportive experience as they face challenges and opportunities. You will leverage leadership skills, great customer service, relationship building, and technology to coach and inspire a successful team. You will oversee business development efforts with employers of all types in San Diego to position the organization as a trusted partner for employer talent needs in our region. This is a new team, and candidates should be prepared for some changes to priorities and business processes as we experiment to find the best ways to serve our business customers.

The Work

Leadership

  • Attracts, retains, and develops a high-performing team
  • Drives accountability to implement the agency’s policies, procedures, and performance metrics
  • Develops a network of funders, business partners and leaders in the field to support innovative programming
  • Identifies outcomes, trends, and forward-thinking strategy
  • Analyzes local labor market trends to inform business development strategy and focus

Business Development Strategy

  • Builds and maintains productive, long-term relationships with public-sector, private-sector and non-profit employers to determine workforce and or talent needs in the San Diego Region
  • Creates a comprehensive approach to assess employer talent development and training needs and match them to Workforce Partnership business services and job-seeker programs
  • Researches the latest in the business industry, creates new opportunities to expand business development outreach efforts and contacts potential employers to establish a business relationship
  • Generates qualified leads for Sector Initiative Programs and Talent Pipeline Management efforts
  • Keeps a strong understanding of San Diego Workforce Partnership programs to identify potential business development opportunities
  • Accurately manages the Business Development pipeline activities and develops workflows to manage the employer customer journey for the organization and owns the sales lifecycle from prospecting to implementation
  • Collaborate with Employer Services and Sector Initiatives teams to align on job seeker customer and business needs

Business Development Operations Management

  • Identifies, creates, and manages CRM/Salesforce business engagement outreach tracking trainings
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of business development activities and recommends modifications to processes and procedures; manages ongoing creation and evolution of SOPs
  • Manages business development reporting needs to track lead funnel and conversion rates
  • Ensures the Business Development team is maintaining high-quality, accurate, and up-to-date data in CRM/Salesforce
  • Engages with other business-facing roles to coordinate data inputs for business development reporting
  • Assesses resources, streamlines lead development process, and elevates local reputation in the business community
  • Lead internal and external meetings with businesses representing the Workforce Partnership’s mission and vision
  • Prepares and delivers pitches and presentations to potential new business/employer clients
  • Ensures excellent customer service through regular business client follow up
  • Develops rapport with key business/employer decision makers
  • Identify creative ways to be cost-effective and streamline operations to maximize use of resources
  • All other duties as assigned

Requirements

What You Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant area of study or equivalent 4 years of work experience
  • 6+ years business project/program management experience and 3+ years of supervisory experience
  • Experience empowering and challenging individuals and teams to meet goals and holding them accountable
  • Demonstrated ability to think critically, solve problems creatively, and effectively design solutions to meet the needs of diverse business customers
  • Entrepreneurial mindset and proven track record of taking responsibility and delivering results
  • Focus on customer experience and service
  • High attention to detail and a focus on analytical decision
  • Passionate about and able to clearly articulate the Workforce Partnership’s mission and vision
  • Outstanding ability to identify new methods, better approaches and integration of other ideas
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills including presentation presence
  • Experience with using a CRM (e.g., Salesforce) highly preferred
  • Experience with the Workforce Innovation Opportunity Act (WIOA) business programming a plus
  • Some travel to offsite locations may be required
