The Martyr Mentality: How A '30 Under 30' Lawyer Qualifies For Public Housing

Lauren Burke is a 31-year-old lawyer. She’s a Forbes 30 Under 30 (2013), former Skadden Fellow, a current Echoing Green Global Fellow, New York University’s distinguished young alumna of 2013, and she’s fluent in Mandarin. But instead of taking a job at a law firm, Lauren ran with her passion and co-founded Atlas: DIY, Developing Immigrant Youth, an incubator of education, empowerment and community for undocumented youth and their allies.

Lauren disrupts the legal system because she’s teaching her clients how to do her job. “Our way of looking at traditional charities is outdated and paternalistic,” says Lauren. “We need to shake things up, forget about our egos, actively engage the disadvantaged and work with them — not for them — to change their lives, communities, and potentially the world.”
