Verónica Flores: I was arrested today for the NY Dream Act

“I was arrested today for the NY Dream Act.”

Veronica Flores, self described “queer immigrant writer, activist, and artist,” is our (s)hero of the day. Both Veronica and Marco Galavis, members of our pro-immigrant partners NYSYLC, were arrested in front of Governor Cuomo’s office today as part of their protest to draw attention to the need for a state-level Dream Act to provide financial aid for undocumented immigrants living in the US.

A state-level Dream Act has been largely supported by pro-immigrant groups and some politicians. It is common sense: by preventing immigrant students from attaining higher education, you bar them from becoming active, productive members of our society. Statistically, immigrants start more businesses, create more start-ups, and therefor create more jobs, than any other group in America. Lets stop preventing our young immigrants from succeeding in life, and start allowing the to be more productive members in our communities.
