In State Tuition for Undocumented Immigrants.

Last Tuesday, state Senate gave final legislative approval that permits Connecticut’s public Colleges and Universities to allow undocumented immigrants to pay in-state tuition rates. The bill has already being approved by the House and Gov. Dannel P. Malloy. It is strongly supported by the community, like leaders of public colleges and the towns Catholic bishops. Critics say that it is unfair to reward people who break the law. Supporters say that this is a beneficial law that will not cost tax payers because undocumented students will still be paying for their own education. Just like any other bill, there are some requirements: the undocumented students will have to have attended a Connecticut high school for four years and graduated; the students will have to sign an affidavit promising to seek legal status. One of the bills critics, Senate Republican Leader John Mckinney, said that this bill will only attract more undocumented immigrants that are looking for an affordable education.

The government should focus more on bills that will allow students to succeed in school and help them reach their goals instead of keeping them in subordination. Undocumented students are struggling to get an education in order to progress and have a better life to give their children, something their parents could not do. All children, regardless of their status, should have the right to education.
