Utah has passed a new bill this Friday that will hopefully shape the way undocumented immigrants live and have change in the U.S., especially in the state of Arizona after the passage of the S.B. 1070 bill. This bill being giving Arizona authorities more power to report undocumented immigrants to immigration authorities. The Utah bill is a guest worker program for undocumented immigrants, giving undocumented immigrants legal status to work in this state.
I have to say that the bill has some unconformities for low income families because of some of the rules the bill. For example, there is a fine of $2,500 that undocumented immigrants have to pay but the time limit to pay has not being set. Nonetheless, it is a sign of progressing with the way we think about undocumented immigrants in the United States. Julian Preston, the reporter of today’s article, said it is best to “set up a negotiation rather than a confrontation, between the governor and the federal authorities”. We, as a country have to come to an agreement so that we don’t continue hurting the immigration youth, who are the ones being hurt the most. To them, this is their country. This is home for them.
