Come to a special Power Night event! A formerly undocumented author shares her story.
On June 24th at 6pm, we will be hosting Maria E. Andreu, author of the novel The Secret Side of Empty. Maria’s book about an undocumented teen was inspired by her own experiences after immigrating to the US.
More about The Secret Side of Empty:
As a straight-A student with a budding romance and loyal best friend, M.T.’s life seems as apple-pie American as her blondish hair and pale skin. But M.T. hides two facts to the contrary: her full name of Monserrat Thalia and her status as an undocumented immigrant.
With senior year of high school kicking into full swing, M.T. sees her hopes for a “normal” future unraveling. And it will take discovering a sense of trust in herself and others for M.T. to stake a claim in the life that she wants.
Author Maria E. Andreu draws from her personal experience to tell a story that is timely, relevant, and universally poignant.
Bookish described The Secret Side of Empty as a “must-read,” and Publisher’s Weekly called it “eye-opening and wrenching.”
This is an incredible opportunity to meet the author of a debut novel that is getting rave reviews! Maria will answer questions about her book, her inspiration, and her writing process, and also her experiences as an undocumented young person.
We have some copies of the book at the Atlas office, and it is also available at the library. We encourage you to read it before the event (though we welcome all Atlas members and friends to attend even if you have not finished the book!).
Watch the Atlas newsletter for more info as the event gets closer. Looking forward to seeing you there!
