What we missed...

Atlas has been swamped lately with video shoots, finals and the holiday season so we’re going to start taking a page from the amazing blog feministing

Starting this week we’ll provide a “recap” of great articles, events, etc related to immigrant news and topics that happened in the past week. Hopefully this will provide a great resource for all!

So, this week, here’s what we missed:

According to TRAC  of the 297,551 (!!!!) pending immigration cases that could end in deportation only 8.3% involve criminal charges. What is wrong with this picture?

NYSYLC reports undocumented youth were turned AWAY from NY’s Dream Act hearing because they lacked the ID’s the act would provide.

The term “anchor baby” is FINALLY being referred to as “offensive” in the American Heritage Dictionary.

The NYtimes (who still refuse to remove the term “illegal immigrant” from their pieces, don’t even get us started…) tries to puzzle together why so many hispanics are dropping out of high school. (One hint: “fear that contact with school officials may lead to deportation.”)

A great article by Colorlines  discusses the recent suicide of Joaquin Luna and what steps we can all take to better emotionally support undocumented people in our lives.

We’re digging NPR’ s new “In Limbo” series, especially two of their latest entries on undocumented immigrants making change including a brain surgeon and Maria Luna whose story shows just how complicated, and morally wrong, our current system can be.

THIS illustrates how high the ignorance re: the immigration debate is (and how people think that making such offensive remarks is so socially accepted that they display it in their OFFICE!!!)

And lastly, we just love how Mitt Romney inadvertently made an AWESOME video for the Dream Act. (Here’s the video description from his youtube site: When generations of immigrants looked up and saw the Statue of Liberty for the first time, they surely had many questions and doubts about the life before them, but one thing they knew without a doubt is that they were coming to a place where anything was possible—that in America, their children would have a better life.)

Happy reading y’all! Please send in articles for next week’s edition to orgatlas@gmail.com!
