What We Missed (1/19-1/26)

Huffington Posts’s Bob Libal points out how the militarization of our borders and immigration regulation is counterproductive to progress on comprehensive immigration reform, though I do believe the title of the article could have been better worded.

I found this story disgusting: the NY Times has reported that a judge in Texas has allowed a group of immigration agents to continue with a lawsuit against the federal government. The premise? President Obama’s Deferred Action policies don’t allow them to do their job by detaining certain groups of immigrants, and leaving others.

While this lawsuit creates unnecessary noise and waste of taxpayer resources, President Obama announced earlier this week that he would unveil immigration plans this Tuesday  A complete immigration overhaul including a pathway to citizenship for undocumented Americans.

Lets hope this will lead to real action, not just more words on the President’s part because according to Yahoo Finance (among other sources), top business leaders agree that the US’s current anti-immigrant immigration policies are hurting the economy.

John McCain must also agree (I know, I’m shocked too) because he has come out publicly this past week in support of comprehensive immigration reform. #CIR may not mean the same to McCain as it does to us because, as Politico reports, he has had a complicated past regarding his views on immigration.

One person who is 100% sure what immigration reform means to him is Rubén Hinojosa, chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, who says he will not support any attempts at reform that do not include a pathway to citizenship. Thank you Mr. Hinojosa, for sticking to your beliefs and saying what needs to be said.
