On February 7th, Representative Ted Poe (R-TX) announced that he would take the position of head of the Immigration Reform Caucus (IRC) in Congress. The Immigration Reform Caucus has a long history of promoting restrictionist immigration policies centered around deportations. Currently, the Immigration Reform Caucus is the main block of anti-immigrant politicians in the House of Representatives.
Although the IRC has traditionally promoted anti-immigrant policies, Ted Poe’s own views on immigration place him even further right than many members of the Caucus. Here is a list of Ted Poe’s views on immigration: He is adamantly opposed to any form of a pathway to citizenship; He voted to increase spending on ineffective border-security packages; He wants to end birthright citizenship; He is in favor of mass deportations. In fact, Poe is given A+ ratings from the majority of anti-immigrant policy watchers.
In 2010, Poe made national headlines because of his outrageous views on immigration – namely, comparing America’s undocumented immigrants to grasshoppers. The following is a quote from the June 2010 speech:
“Now it seems to me that if we are so advanced with technology and manpower and competence that we can capture illegal grasshoppers from Brazil… If we’re able to do that as a country, how come we can’t capture the thousands of people that cross the border everyday on the southern border of the United States? You know they’re a little bigger than grasshoppers and they should be able to be captured easier.”
We feel Poe’s disgusting radical views on immigration make him unfit for a position at the head of the Immigration Reform Caucus. If this is the kind of reform Republican House members are promoting, NO THANK YOU!
