New York State pulled out of the Secure Communities program.

New York State pulled out of the Secure Communities (SC) program last Wednesday. Governor Andrew Cuomo wrote a letter to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security stating that the program was aiming to hunting down undocumented people and deporting them, instead of only deporting those who have criminal records.

SC is also only destroying the confidence people put on authority. Fortunately, some local officials and states such as New York and Illinois are withdrawing out of the program. The state of California plans on withdrawing as well. However, SC plans on going nationwide by 2013. It claims that the program is beneficial, that they are only trying to fight criminals.

It seems that Secure Communities is trying too hard to show that there protect communities. If that was really what they are doing, then states would not be withdrawing out of the program. If they are indeed secure, then more counties and states would be entering the program.

The reality of it is much harsher. A significant portion of those deported do not have criminal record. SC has also deported green lawful permanent residents. Immigrant groups, lawyers, non-profits, students, and advocates have fought back against this racist agenda, as if profiles mostly those of Latino and “foreign looking” origin. People have made themselves heard through petitions, know-your-rights and advocacy workshops, banners, letters to representatives, and more. SC is tearing apart families, and the people are responding back against this injustice.
