Dear friends, colleagues, supporters, and rockstars of Atlas: DIY and the immigrant community of NYC,
It was only one year ago that we had our first meeting in a coffee shop in the West Village and began to form what would hopefully become the first social cooperative service NGO for undocumented youth in NYC. 366 days later to the date we have a website (www.findingatlas.wordpress.com) a facebook page, Atlas:DIY and a twitter account @atlasdiy. We have raised over $10,000, created a series of Know Your Rights videos that we hope will soon blow up the net, and formed community partnerships. Most importantly, on January 29th we will open our doors to any and all immigrant youth in NYC on every Sunday and Monday of the year!!!
I know, the excitement is palpable and we simply cannot wait to begin! If you’re interested in getting involved, here are some ways we could really really use the support. If any of the below resonate then shoot us an email at firstname.lastname@example.org. Please also feel free to send this along to your networks and friends! We can’t wait to get started!
All the best,
Lauren and the team at Atlas: DIY
Do you have a skill you’d love to teach a young person? Can you help lead an English class or tutor someone in math or science? Do you know how to navigate the college application process or can assist in writing an essay? Do you teach yoga, meditation or other forms of emotional empowerment? Could you lead a support group or provide legal consultations? Would you like to mentor an immigrant youth in life skills and goals or just show them around NYC? Then we want you!!! We are looking for volunteers that can make a ONE HOUR A MONTH commitment to these kids!
We have begun to find some wonderful partner organizations to come into our awesome space in Sunset Park, Brooklyn to lead workshops and trainings, or to provide legal counsel to access an otherwise unreachable population. If you, your company or NGO would be interested in providing services to immigrant youth, please let us know! Examples of partnerships include providing legal immigration screenings for Atlas youth, counseling youth on worker’s rights and wage and hour violations, leading youth empowerment workshops and coming in for presentations on reproductive health. Let’s work together!
Do you know of an immigrant youth in need of a safe space in NYC? Could a student of yours benefit from extra college advice or tutoring? Is there a client you know who would benefit from a supportive, bicultural environment to move towards self empowerment? Do you know a self-motivated teen interested in being trained on peer advocacy and youth rights? Send them our way!!!
We’re looking for pretty much anything and everything to get us off the ground. Biggest wishes right now include movies and documentaries, books and games, yoga mats, interview clothes and general office supplies!
Please save the date for our launch party on THURSDAY, January 26th from 6-9pm! This will also serve as the world premier of our know your rights videos! Location is tentative so stay tuned and keep your calendar clear!
